University of Duisburg-Essen, Duisburg / Essen

The University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) was formed in 2003 through the merger of the University of Duisburg and the University of Essen, and today it is one of the largest universities in Germany with campuses in both cities. Located in the Ruhr metropolitan area, UDE benefits from close ties to regional industry, particularly in engineering, materials science, and energy technology, as well as strong collaborations with nearby institutions in Bochum and Dortmund.

UDE has built a strong international reputation in nanoscience and nanoengineering through its NETZ (Nanoelektronik-Zentrum) institute, as well as in medicine through its affiliated university hospital, Essen University Hospital. The university is also home to well-regarded research in empirical educational research, a field where it consistently ranks among Germany’s leading institutions. Engineering programs such as Computer Engineering and Automotive Engineering reflect the university’s practical orientation toward industry needs, particularly automotive and electronics sectors prominent in the region.

As a comprehensive university, UDE offers a broad range of disciplines beyond engineering and medicine, including humanities, social sciences, business, and education. Students benefit from relatively affordable living costs typical of the Ruhr area compared to other major German cities, along with good transport connections across the densely populated region. International students form a significant part of the student body, supported by dedicated international offices and a growing number of English-taught master’s programs.
