Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Berlin

Founded in 1810, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU Berlin) is one of Germany’s oldest and most respected universities, and it helped shape the modern research university model through its founding principle of unity between teaching and research. Its historic main campus on Unter den Linden, in central Berlin, places students close to major cultural and political institutions, while additional campuses in Adlershof and Mitte host the natural sciences and life sciences faculties.

HU Berlin consistently ranks among the top universities in Germany and is a member of the U15 group of leading German research universities. It has particularly strong reputations in history, philosophy, law, economics, and the natural sciences, alongside a growing profile in computer science and data-driven fields. The university’s long list of affiliated Nobel laureates, including physicists, chemists, and literature laureates, reflects a deep-rooted academic tradition that continues to attract international students and researchers.

As a large public university, HU Berlin offers a wide range of English- and German-taught master’s programs and benefits from close ties to other Berlin institutions, including Freie Universität and Technische Universität Berlin, through the Berlin University Alliance. Students benefit from Berlin’s busy, international city life alongside access to major libraries, archives, and research institutes.
