Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen

Founded in 1477, the University of Tübingen is one of Germany’s oldest universities and holds Excellence University status under the German government’s Excellence Strategy. It sits in the town of Tübingen on the Neckar River and has long been a center for theology and the humanities. In recent decades it has also become a major site for artificial intelligence and cognitive science research, partly through close ties to the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems and the Cyber Valley initiative.
The Machine Learning and Neuroscience graduate programs attract students from around the world and benefit from an unusually dense concentration of AI and brain research institutes in a small city. Beyond STEM and cognitive fields, Tübingen keeps a strong reputation in philosophy, theology, and classical studies. The compact, walkable old town means students, faculty, and institutes are closely tied into everyday life.
With around 27,000 students, Tübingen offers a smaller academic environment than Germany’s large urban universities while still giving access to modern research infrastructure. International students will find a growing number of English-taught master’s programs, particularly in the sciences, alongside a lively student culture shaped by the university’s long presence in the town.
